Interview
What brought you to the Czech Republic, and what made you join the EUFRAT team? My family moved from London to the Czech Republic in 2015.
I am currently a grammar school student in Pilsen. When I came in to pick up my Cambridge exam certificate, I was approached by one of EUFRAT’s staff members, and was offered a job interview.
What is, in your opinion, the mission of a language tutor? A language tutor should try to immerse students in the language by speaking as it is really spoken, to simulate an English-speaking environment as much as possible.
What would your students say about you? Hopefully that I am friendly and that they enjoy my lessons. I would be grateful for feedback from students, in order to develop myself and optimise the lessons.
And how would you describe your students? My students are perhaps a little too shy to speak English just yet. I sincerely hope that it will change the more they progress. I want to encourage a friendly atmosphere, where all students feel comfortable to speak at whatever level of English they presently have.
Is there a lasting lesson you hope students take from your classes? I hope they learn English not only because their employer wants them to, but also because they truly enjoy the language and begin to hear English in the same way I do – as a poetic and romantic language.
What is, according to you, the best thing about EUFRAT? EUFRAT’s enthusiastic, inclusive and friendly atmosphere.
Is there a message you would like to send to your future students? Don’t worry too much if you don’t understand each and every word at first. When spoken by native speakers, English can be quite different from the English you were probably taught at primary and secondary school by Czech teachers. With practice, it will come to you. Try to expose yourselves to any audio in native English as much as possible.
